Which conditioner should you buy? Well, it depends on the condition and texture of your hair. Your stylist will know when to use an instant conditioner for detangling only or when to use a moisturizing or protein conditioning treatment. Let's understand the difference:
1. Instant conditioners/rinses, left on for only a few minutes, smooth the hair's cuticle which detangles the hair.
2. Moisturizing conditioners, which are allowed to work for 10-20 minutes, restore moisture to the hair, balance the hair's pH, and smooth/coat the hair shaft resulting in control and shine.
3. Protein conditioners are used to strengthen hair and repair split ends. They are formulated to replace the protein lost in the hair. They should be used according to the manufacturer's directions. Improper use may result in breakage.
Love your hair.

Mischo Beauty Pick

You may not know this, but the skin around the eyes is the thinnest skin on the body and is for most people, the first place to show signs of aging. Who knew that you were supposed to start using an eye cream in your 20’s? I didn't know this until I started my esthetics program. I use this under my moisturizer, morning and night, and it’s formulated to protect against free radicals (they damage skin cells and cause aging), reduce puffiness and diminish dark circles. I love it.

Mischo Beauty School: Facials 101

I can’t begin to name all the reasons why you should incorporate facials into your beauty routine, right now, TODAY! Not only are facials relaxing and pampering, but they are crucial to maintaining the health of your skin. First, let’s understand what exactly a facial is! A facial is a service performed by an esthetician designed to improve and revive the skin. They help maintain the skin’s health and correct certain skin conditions through deep cleansing, massage, and the use of masks and other products and treatments. Here are a few of the many benefits:
1. SLOWS DOWN PREMATURE AGING
2. Deep cleansing
3. Deep exfoliation
4. Increases circulation & detoxifies
5. A skin analysis, product prescription and custom home regimen from an esthetician
6. Stimulates skin renewal and metabolism
7. Corrects or alleviates conditions such as dryness, oiliness and redness
8. Softens wrinkles and aging lines
9. Helps clear up blemishes and minor acne
10. SLOWS DOWN PREMATURE AGING
Love your skin.

Mischo Beauty School: Hair Relaxers & Thinning/Breakage 101

I’ve received many questions on the use of hair relaxers resulting in thinning hair and hair breakage, so I’ve decided to address the issue. Damage from relaxers may result from a number of reasons. At any rate, the problem could be due to one of the following:
1. The "strength" of the relaxer might be stronger than that needed for your particular hair texture. Relaxers come in "mild, regular or super" strengths.
2. Your stylist may not be applying the relaxer properly. It should ONLY be applied to the NEW hair growth, every 6-8 weeks. No overlapping onto previously relaxed hair!
3. Thermal styling may be an issue. Are you frequently using a curling iron, flat iron or blow-dryer? If so, that will definitely contribute to thinning/breakage.
4. Do you color your hair? If you use permanent haircolor, the application should be at least two weeks after relaxing or you will experience thinning/breakage. You should only be using a mild relaxer.
If you're thinning near the scalp, then it's probably from improper application or overlapping of the relaxer onto the previously relaxed hair. If you're thinning along the length of the hair, then it's probably due to excessive heat from a curling/flat iron, blow-drying or constant chemical overprocessing.
Hopefully your stylist will identify the problem and offer you a new haircare regimen. If you feel that your problem is different from those listed above, I'd recommend you visit a Dermatologist.
Love your hair.

Lash/Brow Tinting Models Wanted: 12/15/07

I'm nearing the end of my program, but practice makes perfect- hence the repeat posts!
I'm completing a lash/brow tinting class and need models for a review by my instructor. This service is done using a vegetable-based dye and is completely safe for the eyes. Tinting brows saves from having to stencil or fill them in with pencil. Opt for a blue-black or brown tint for lash definition. Tinting lasts four to six weeks. The service is FREE.

Mischo Beauty School: Hair Relaxers 101

Let’s understand the difference between “lye” and “no-lye” hair relaxers. Relaxers break certain chemical bonds in the hair so that they can’t reform. This simply means that hair that was once curly, is now permanently straightened. Certain relaxers use “lye” to break these bonds. Lye is a very strong chemical base that can burn your skin and damage your hair if not used correctly. With "no lye" relaxers, another chemical is used in the place of lye and is considered a medium strength base. Research has shown that the use of "no lye" relaxers results in less scalp irritation, but the same safety rules apply. Both types of relaxers can burn the scalp if used incorrectly. It’s wrong to assume that compared to “lye” relaxers, "no lye" relaxers take the worry out of straightening your hair. Both types of relaxers contain caustic chemicals.
If you choose to apply your own relaxer, please ask for help. You aren’t able to see and reach the top and back of your hair and this could lead to an improper application of the relaxer. Also, making sure that the relaxer is thoroughly rinsed can be a challenge. Relaxers should be used based on manufacturer’s instructions, left on no longer than the prescribed time, carefully washed out with neutralizing shampoo, and followed up with regular conditioning. If you’re in doubt, please follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Love your hair.
