Mischo Beauty News

The world of beauty blogging was featured in today's "Fashion & Style" section of The New York Times. Click here to read more:

Beauty Blogs Come of Age: Swag, Please!

My very first beauty blog was "I Love Mischo" and I started it because of my new found excitement and passion for just having received my cosmetology license and just having started my apprenticeship at Vidal Sassoon. I felt that this was one of the many ways to share with the world all that I had learned and was so passionate about. It evolved into "Mischo Beauty", as I have since then received my makeup artistry license and esthetics license. Any one who knows me, knows that beauty is my passion. It started with me doing my dolls hair when I was little and continued on to my selecting to analyze the chemical composition of "lye vs. no lye" relaxers for my final project in my Analytical Chemistry course at Spelman College. At one point over the past few years while working my corporate job, I also worked at a hair salon, a day spa and went to cosmetology school full-time. Yes, three jobs and school all at the same time! The greater the challenge, the greater the reward...

I share this with you to let you know that I don't blog to receive free beauty products, actually I haven't received anything free as of yet! And, I don't think there's anything wrong with blogging about free products. If I've used a product I've stated that I have, and if I don't like a product I will share that with you as well. See my post for the YSL mascara. At any rate I love my blog and I love those of you who continue to support me. Thank you. Also, thank you to all of you who've volunteered over the past few years to be hair models, waxing models, eyebrow/lash tinting models and facial models. I could not have achieved all of this without you!

Mischo Beauty Pick

I now truly believe in the term "beauty sleep" but it took my studying skin physiology to understand it. When you're sleeping your skin cells repair themselves, which is why it's best to use serums, that penetrate deep into the skin, at night. Serums are extremely effective in aiding in the cell repair/renewal process. I was introduced to this product by a sales associate at Sephora recently. It is formulated with omega 3, vitamin E and vitamin A, which all work together to aid in the cell renewal process while hydrating the skin. I wasn't sure what to expect from this serum, but after the very first night I used it, I saw a HUGE difference in my skin. I highly recommend this!

Mischo Beauty Pick

I recently purchased CoverGirl’s Lash Blast Mascara in black brown. I must admit that the print ad campaign was what encouraged me to try it. The packaging is somewhat bulky and it was separately capped, allowing you to replace the cap with the brush after using. I’ve been using it for several weeks now and what I love most is that it completely separates my lashes and gives them a “thicker, fuller” look. No lash clumping at all. Well worth the $7.65!

Mischo Beauty School: Hair Porosity 101

Let's discuss the hair's porosity. Porosity means the ability of the hair to absorb and retain moisture and is used to describe the condition of hair. It falls into the following categories:

a. Very porous
b. Porous
c. Normal
d. Resistant

A “normal” porosity will mean that the cuticle is closed and smooth. Healthy hair will usually have a normal to resistant cuticle, depending on the texture. ”Porous” to “very porous” hair will have a roughened cuticle meaning that the hair is probably damaged. It usually loses moisture very easy and is easily damaged.

To determine the porosity of your hair, feel it - both when wet and dry. If it feels straw-like and rough when dry, or if it feels gummy or slightly rubbery when wet, then you probably have a problem with porous to very porous hair. You should consult your stylist before receiving any chemical services in order to prevent further damage. Haircolor will take much more quickly and strongly and perms and relaxers will process much faster in porous to very porous hair.

Porous to very porous hair can be caused by:

1. Over coloring
2. Bleaching
3. Permanent Waving
4. Relaxing
5. Flat/curling irons
6. Improper blow-drying
7. Environment (sun, salt/chlorinated water)

Love your hair.

Mischo Beauty Pick

As we all know, winter weather causes dry, dehydrated skin. Dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks hydration. I was able to find exactly what I needed in this cleanser. It has a nice, light scent; it contains humectants which hydrate the body; rose is a great moisturizing essential oil; and it has an antiseptic/antibacterial action. I recommend this for all skin types.

Mischo Beauty School: Facial Cleansing 101

Cleansing is the foundation of great skin. It removes makeup, dirt and dead skin cells. It is the most important step in a skincare routine and should be done twice in the morning and twice in the evening. Cleanser benefits include the following:

1. Dissolves makeup and dirt to unblock pores and prepare the skin for other products.

2. Milky cleaners have emollients that soften dry skin.

3. Cleansers contain ingredients to counteract various skin problems.

4. Additional ingredients can help certain skin conditions such as sensitivity, dehydration, or capillary problems.

Love your skin.

I have normal/combination skin and I've started using Dermalogica's clay based Skin Refining Masque on my oily t-zone (forehead, nose and chin). It's reduced the oil, and because it contains cucumber and menthol, it's very soothing on the skin. On the other areas of my face, the dehydrated areas (eyes, lips, cheeks and neck), I've been using the Skin Hydrating Masque. This cold, winter weather seems to be taking a toll on my skin and not only has this given me much needed hydration, my skin is also being nourished with antioxidants. I highly recommend both!

Mischo Beauty Vote: Eye Makeup Remover Favorites?

Mischo Beauty School: Haircolor 101

I’m passionate about haircolor and I’ve wanted to discuss this topic for quite some time. My apprenticeship at Vidal Sassoon required me to search high and low for models wanting root touch-ups, highlights, gray coverage, bleach & tone, highlift blonde, and single & double processes. Believe it or not, I was always able to find a model that needed one of these services and the results always left me amazed and excited about the next assignment.

With that said, let’s discuss haircolor. Haircolor falls into four categories: temporary, semipermanent, demipermanent, and permanent.

1. Temporary haircolor coats the hair shaft and is easily removed by shampooing. Examples include color rinses or color-enhancing shampoos.

2. Semipermanent haircolor partially penetrates the hair shaft and slowly fades with shampooing. It doesn’t lighten the hair and is usually used to enhance fading haircolor.

3. Demipermanent haircolor doesn’t lighten hair and, like semipermanent haircolor, it is used to enhance fading haircolor. It penetrates the hair shaft and lasts longer than semipermanent haircolor.

4. Permanent haircolor is used to lighten hair and cover gray. It remains in the hair shaft until the growth of new hair.

Love your hair.

Mischo Beauty School: At-Home Skincare 101

With the start of the new year, there's no better time to begin a skincare regimen then now! Every client I've seen for a facial thus far this new year has asked me what they should be doing at home to care for their skin. Here is my recommendation for an at-home skincare regimen in between facials:

1. Cleanse morning & night (never go to bed without cleansing your face!)
2. Tone after cleansing morning & night
3. Use your moisturizer with a minimum of SPF 15 during the day (very, very important!)
4. Use your moisturizer at night
5. Use an eye cream both morning and night under your moisturizer
6. Exfoliate 2x a week
7. Use your mask 2x a week
8. Take a multi-vitamin daily
9. Drink at minimum of 8 glasses of water daily
10. Eat fresh green vegetables at least 3x a week
11. Make sure you're getting adequate sleep!

Most important of all- make sure you're using products for your skin type. For instance, if you have oily skin, look for products for oily skin. Also, make sure your products are labeled "noncomedogenic" which simply means that they won't clog pores.

Love your skin.
