Mischo Beauty Loves: Scarlett Johansson for L'Oreal Paris' Superior Preference Haircolor Ad Campaign

I've been a Scarlett Johansson fan since I saw her in "Ghost World" and I loved her Louis Vuitton ad campaign. The hair colorist in me loves her ad campaign for L'Oreal's Superior Preference haircolor. Enjoy.

Mischo Beauty Pick: POP Beauty Lip Lust

I decided to give my nude lip look a break and try Pop Beauty's Lip Lust in Flirty Fuchsia. There were three reasons why - first, I loved the color. Though it's fuchsia, it's very sheer and perfect for my "day" look. If I need my look to "pop" I just apply a few layers and I'm ready to go! Second, it contains hyaluronic acid, which retains water (1,000 times it's weight) and helps to plump lips. I was blessed with full, beautiful lips, but I do like that fact that this will keep my lips moisturized. And finally, the size of the tube is perfect for all of the clutches I've been carrying lately. Love it!

Mischo Beauty School: Exfoliation 101

I'm sure you all are aware of the benefits of exfoliation, but if you aren't, here's a very quick lesson! Exfoliation is simply the removal of dry, dead surface skin cells. An exfoliant is an ingredient that assists in the exfoliation process. Alpha hydroxy acids and gentle scrubs are examples of what would be called a chemical exfoliant and a physical exfoliant. You should incorporate exfoliation into your skincare regimen (as I've mentioned before!) and here are the reasons why:

1. Leaves skin feeling silky smooth!
2. Facilitates the extraction of dirt/oil that clogs pores (helps prevent acne!)
3. Faster cell turnover rate (keeps skin younger looking!)
4. Improves the skin's ability to retain moisture (prevents dry skin!)
5. Helps penetration/delivery of product ingredients into the skin
6. Stimulates blood flow
7. Smooth skin makes the application of makeup easier!

Any questions? Love your skin.

Beautiful hair needs an expert: Hana Professional 1" Flat Iron

If you've been following my blog, then you all know that I'm a hairstylist and was taught the proper way to flat iron hair during my apprenticeship at Vidal Sassoon. I own about six flat irons- a few of which I bought while in cosmetology school and a few more when I'd started apprenticing. Right now I'm using the Hana Professional 1" Ceramic Flat Iron and I'm loving it! First I love the fact that the ceramic plates are infused with tourmaline, so I can count on an even distribution of heat and a smooth finish with lots of shine. And because I'm always doing my hair on the go (which means I'm wrapping up a hot flat iron and throwing it in my bag- dangerous, I know!) I'm loving the fact that this comes with a heat proof storage pouch and a heat proof silicone mat. And by now we know how important a temperature dial is! I've said this before- not everyone can flat iron their hair on the same temperature setting, without causing damage. This includes a temperature dial, allowing you to set the temperature based on your hair's texture and needs. This is perfect for the jet-setting Beyonce and I recommend it for you!

Mischo Beauty: Sienna Miller's ELLE UK Magazine July 2008 Cover

As I was searching for the July issue of Italian Vogue in Barnes & Noble last night with no luck, I decided to pick up the July issue of Elle UK. I've loved Sienna Miller since she caught my attention with her short, disconnect bob she wore a few years ago. Her haircut was inspiration for a haircutting competition I won while in cosmetology school. Click this link to watch behind the scenes of her cover shoot.

Love the looks?

Mischo Beauty Review: Artemis Woman Personal Groomer

I'm recommending this Artemis Woman Personal Groomer to my clients who dread waxing and make it much more of an ordeal than it should be (though waxing isn't for everyone), and also to those who prefer to do their own touch-ups at home in-between waxing appointments. For some it takes time for hair to begin growing on the same growth cycle and I don't recommend shaving in-between waxing appointments. After testing this out, I found that it was easy to use and gentle enough to be used on the eyebrows, face, arms and bikini line.

Mischo Beauty Product Review: Lavilin Natural Deodorant Cream

A few months ago I wrote about my wanting to give natural deodorants a try. I did find a good one, but I've found an even better one! It's Lavilin and it's a deodorant cream formulated with arnica and calendula which work to eliminate the bacteria that causes odor. It's free of aluminum, alcohol, parabens and phthalates. The claim is that it will keep you odor free for up to 7 days, and for me it worked for 3 full days. I liked that fact that the application of the deodorant only required a very small amount and I didn't need to reapply until after the 3rd day. It's water resistant, hypo-allergenic and fragrance free and I highly recommend it!

Mischo Beauty Loves: Halle Berry for Versace Spring/Summer 2006 Ad Campaign

As I was searching for a beauty ad campaign to feature, I stumbled on Halle's current Revlon ad campaign. The current campaign seems to be a bit boring- or maybe it's just that all of her Revlon ad campaigns look the same? Or maybe Revlon's website is boring compared to L'Oreal's? Anyway, I remember loving the ad campaign she'd done with Versace back in 2006 and decided to feature it instead. Congrats to all of those (manicurist, hairstylist, makeup artist, fashion stylist, creative director, art director and photographer, etc.) who worked to make this a success!

Mischo Beauty: Elle Magazine Features Estelle

I've got Estelle's "American Boy" in rotation on my iPod and I am in love with her glam squad! She always looks so fabulous! I'm still researching to find out who they are, but will let you all know soon. At any rate, Estelle shares her product favorites with Elle in the "Rock Stars Beauty Products" report. Here are six of her "must-have" beauty picks: Kissable Couture Chris Lip Gloss in Pure Peach; The Body Shop Face Bronzer in Dark Pink; L'Oreal Paris Jet Set Diament Nail Enamel in Autobahn; Lancome Tonique Radiance Clarifying Toner; Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser; John Frieda Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hairspray.

I'm loving her picks and definitely second the Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser! I used it in esthetics school and on many clients. It's a gentle cleanser, which soothes and calms upset skin.

What do you think of Estelle's picks?

Mischo Beauty Pick: Dr.Hauschka Daily Face Care Kit

I first learned of the "biodynamic" certification last February after reading an issue of WWD Beauty Biz. It's a beauty certification used to certify products that meet certain requirements, above and beyond the "natural" and "organic" certifications. Dr. Hauschka has been operating for 40 years and produces biodynamic skincare products for every skin type. I've been using the Daily Face Care Kit for normal, dry or sensitive skin and love the fact that it includes a complete skincare regimen - cleanser (Cleansing Milk), exfoliant (Cleansing Cream), toner (Facial Toner) and moisturizer (Moisturizing Day Cream, Rose Day Cream and Quince Day Cream). I did add an eye cream and sunscreen to meet my specific skincare needs. I loved the results and my favorite product in this kit was the Cleansing Cream. It definitely left my skin vibrant and refreshed! I'm somewhat of an exfoliant addict (I LOVE using them) so I have to control myself with the use of them and remind myself that "less is more"! Anyway, this is a great kit for those starting a skincare regimen (which I've stressed over and over again) and perfect for those who travel!

What are your favorite Dr. Hauschka products?

Mischo Beauty School: Hair Relaxers & Thinning/Breakage 101

Since my post last week, I've received many e-mails regarding the use of hair relaxers resulting in hair breakage and thinning hair, so I've decided to address this issue. Damage from relaxers could result from a number of different reasons. When you're trying to determine the cause, consider the following:

1. The "strength" of the relaxer might be stronger than that needed for your particular hair texture. Relaxers come in "mild, regular or super" strengths. For example, if your hair texture is "fine" and you choose to relax your hair, you should only use a "mild" strength relaxer. Using anything stronger will definitely result in damage and possibly hair loss!

2. Your stylist may not be applying the relaxer properly. It should ONLY be applied to your NEW hair growth, every 6-9 weeks, or depending on your rate of hair growth. No overlapping onto previously relaxed hair!

3. Thermal styling might be an issue. Are you frequently using a curling iron, flat iron or blow-dryer? If so, they might be contributing to your hair thinning/breakage. If you have relaxed hair, you should use the least amount of heat to style it as possible.

4. Do you color your hair? If you use permanent haircolor, the application should be at least two weeks after relaxing or you will experience thinning/breakage and possibly serious hair loss. Also, because your hair will now have to withstand two chemical processes, you should consider using a mild relaxer.

If you're thinning near the scalp, then it's probably from improper application or overlapping of the relaxer onto the previously relaxed hair.

If you're thinning along the length of the hair, then it's probably due to excessive heat from a curling/flat iron, blow-drying or constant chemical overprocessing.

Hopefully you and your stylist are able to identify the problem and implement a new haircare regimen. My fellow beauty blogger Julia of "All About The Pretty" is treating her hair to some extra TLC with the Kerastase Substance Constructive and loves it!

If you feel that your problem is different from those listed above, I'd recommend you visit a Dermatologist. Please feel free to leave questions in the " Comments" section!

Love your hair.

Beautiful hair needs an expert: Kerastase Serum Oleo-Relax

If you've been following my blog, then you know that I post about Kerastase products quite often. I grew to love them during my apprenticeship with Vidal Sassoon, and had the opportunity to work with just about every product. A great blow-drying serum I loved using on my client's hair was the Kerastase Oleo-Relax. A few pumps added to wet hair, before blow-drying, were all that was needed to control frizz- and because it's formulated with Shorea & Palm Oils, your hair is left soft and smooth- and shiny! This would be perfect for Zoe Saldana and her many red carpet appearances. This would not weigh her hair down, nor would it leave it greasy. It makes for an easy flat-iron finish, and with hair this silky, she definitely needs to make sure she's sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase!

Mischo Beauty Reader Favorite: Benefit's Hard Angle Brush

So it's Thursday and it's time for my weekly "Mischo Beauty Reader Favorite" post. I received an e-mail from my reader Shalon, asking me to share her new beauty "must-have"! It's the Hard Angle Brush by Benefit and she uses it for applying a thin line of MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack. She says it gives her that "really open eye look", with no smudges, which eyeliner pencils give her during the summer. She says it's funny, because she only started using the brush to apply eyeliner when she ran out of her eyeliner pencil and now she doesn't know what she'd do without it! She says it can also be used for filling in brows, especially the tail, which you always want both soft and natural-looking.

I love it! Thank for sharing Shalon! Have you tried this brush?

Mischo Beauty Pick: Nailtiques Oil Therapy

I decided to give myself a pedicure over the weekend and give my toes a breather from all the fabulous nail polish colors I've been wearing this summer. I'm an easy pedicure, as I never cut my cuticles and I exfoliate in the shower on a daily basis. Since I was removing Revlon's Fuchsia Fever from my toes, and still noticed a few stains- though I'd used a base coat, I decided to use Nailtiques Oil Therapy and the pink side of the Naitiques Pink & Green Sponge File. The green side is for shaping nails and the pink side is soft enough to use for the removal of ridges or stains on the nails. The oil therapy is a blend of vitamin-enriched oils which work to moisturize the nail and cuticles and can be used over wet polish as a drying agent to help set polish. When I was finished my nails were buffed to a smooth, stain-free finish! As I knew I would be in for the evening, I used the Nailtiques Cuticle & Skin Gel, which is a thick blend of glycerin and aloe. I not only applied it to my cuticles, but went ahead and used it for my feet too! Not sure if I was supposed to do that, but I just couldn't resist!

Mischo Beauty Product Review: L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist

If you're wanting an instant tan and can get help with the application, then this might be the product for you. After using this I saw my tan develop in about 30 minutes. My only issues with this product were that even though it's a "mist" application, I still felt it hard to apply evenly to my back and the back of my legs. After about an hour, you will immediately see the areas you missed, so I suggest asking a friend for help! My other issue was the DHA (dihydroxyacetone is the active ingredient that interacts with the skin to produce the change in color) scent. Maybe my nose is super sensitive, but I smelled it almost immediately. I've tried my fair share of self-tanners over the years, so I'm very familiar with the "funky self-tanner scent"- so much so that I immediately recognize it on other people who are wearing self-tanners with the scent. Anyway, I do know people who aren't bothered by it, and some who don't smell it at all. This might be worth a try if you're looking for a tan in a matter of minutes!

Has anyone used this?

Mischo Beauty School: Hair Relaxers 101

Let's understand the difference between "lye" and "no lye" relaxers. Relaxers break certain chemical bonds in the hair so that they can't reform. This simply means that hair that was once curly, is now permanently straightened and certain relaxers use "lye" to break these bonds. "Lye" is a very strong chemical base that will burn your skin and damage your hair if not used correctly. With "no lye" relaxers, another chemical is used in the place of lye and is considered a medium strength base. Research has shown that the use of "no lye" relaxers results in less scalp irritation, but the same safety rules apply. Both types of relaxers will burn your scalp if used incorrectly and it's wrong to assume that compared to "lye" relaxers, "no lye" relaxers take the worry out of straightening your hair. Both types of relaxers contain caustic chemicals.

If you choose to apply your own relaxer, please ask for help! You aren't able to see and reach the top and back of your hair and this could lead to an improper application of the relaxer. Also, making sure that the relaxer is thoroughly rinsed can be a challenge. Relaxers should be used according to the manufacturer's directions, left on no longer than the suggested time, carefully washed out with neutralizing shampoo, and followed up with regular conditioning.

Any questions? Love your hair.

Please share your relaxer stories!

Mischo Beauty Product Review: L’Oreal's Skin Genesis Daily Moisturizer Oil-Free Lotion

I was recently given the opportunity to try L'Oreal's Skin Genesis Daily Moisturizer Oil-Free Lotion, and because I loved the Daily Treatment Serum Concentrate- I gladly accepted! I've been using this both in the morning (under my sunscreen since it doesn't contain SPF) and at night and have found that my skin both feels smooth and looks hydrated. I have an oily t-zone, so I can appreciate the fact that this is lightweight and oil-free. It contains an anti-aging molecule called Pro-Xylane, which strengthens and tones skin cells which is great for preventing fine lines and wrinkles. And since my undergraduate degree is in Chemistry, I totally appreciate the fact that L'Oreal uses an environmentally safe process called Green Chemistry to extract Pro-Xylane from the beech wood plant. Pro-Xylane is easily absorbed into the environment and is non-toxic and biodegradable. An investment in this product is totally worth it's price and you know you're worth it!

Are you using any products from L'Oreal's Skin Genesis line?

Beautiful hair needs an expert: Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner

So I'm posting about another product from the Sexy Hair line because a few of you asked me about the Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner after reading the comments section from my post last week. This was one product I loved using while in cosmetology school. We used to fight over it- believe it or not- because my school never seemed to keep it stocked! Anyway, I loved it because it has so many uses. Not only is it a great leave-in conditioner and detangler, but I was able to use it for roller sets (depending on the type of hold my client wanted) and for cutting, as opposed to spraying the hair with water to keep it hydrated. It contains a soy protein that strengthens the hair, while conditioning and moisturizing all at the same time. I highly recommend it for someone like Nicole Ritchie, who colors their hair and wears hair extensions because her hair definitely needs constant conditioning. Finally, this product isn't a heavy leave-in conditioner, so there's no need to worry about hair being weighed down- just style as usual!

Has anyone used it?

Mischo Beauty Pick: Q-tips + Mally Roncal

I'm sure you all have figured out by now that I'm a fan of Mally Roncal, by the multiple posts I've done on her over the past few months (smile)! I was finally able to visit her beauty counter a Henri Bendel a few months ago and was not disappointed. Anyway, I was in CVS last night restocking my supply of Q-tips and discovered that she's actually a celebrity expert for the brand! Now that's a perfect fit! Here's one of Mally's tips she shared, with WWD Beauty Biz, a few months ago for keeping your makeup bacteria free: "Use Q-tips whenever possible. In a perfect world, if we were all kajillionaires, we could use our Kevyn Aucoin brush once and throw it away, but we can't. Q-tips get the makeup on and off and you can just ditch them." So true! I can't begin to tell you the many ways I use Q-tips! And for the price - we should all have an easily available supply in our bathrooms! Love it! Any Q-tips users out there?

Mischo Beauty Pick: Johnson & Johnson Melt Away Stress

I was recently given the opportunity to try Johnson & Johnson's Melt Away Stress line of products and believe me- this could not have come at a better time! As you all know, I recently completed a move and most of my time has been spent settling in, so taking time out of try these products turned out to be even better than I'd expected! I started with the Gentle Exfoliating 24 Hour Moisturizing Wash, which gently exfoliates, while cleansing. Next, I used the Melt Away Stress 24 Hour Moisturizing Wash and fell in love with it's "Aromasoothe" scent which is a blend of chamomile and lavender, which equals instant relaxation! I followed that with the Melt Away Stress Body Lotion, which also contains the "Aromasoothe" scent and this left my body so soft and fully moisturized. I used the Melt Away Stress Dreamy Night Cream just on my drier areas- elbows, hands, knees and feet. When I woke up the next morning, I noticed that the drier areas of my body were so soft and smooth. I decided to wax my legs the next day and used the Melt Away Stress Massaging Mosturizer as an "after-wax" treatment. O- and let me just state that the directions don't list that as a "use"- it's just something I decided to do on my own! Anyway, it did not disappoint and not only was it both moisturizing and soothing, but it even reduced redness! Wow!

Have you tried any of the Melt Away Stress products?

Mischo Beauty School: Facial Cleansing 101

The most important step in a skincare regimen, in my opinion, is cleansing. It really is the foundation for great skin because it removes makeup, dirt and dead skin cells. A few of the benefits are:

1. Cleansers dissolve makeup and dirt to unblock pores and prepare the skin for the penetration of other products.

2. Milky cleansers are formulated with emollients that soften dry skin.

3. Cleansers are formulated with ingredients that counteract various skin problems such as sensitivity, acne and capillary problems.

Just the other day I was chatting with a summer intern, who'd just arrived in DC, about caring for her skin. She told me she couldn't afford to purchase products for a 5-step skincare regimen and I told her to make sure she purchases a great cleanser (and uses it in the morning and before bed) and a moisturizer with an SPF and she'd be off to a great start!

Any questions? Love your skin.

Beautiful hair needs an expert: Big Sexy Hair's "Spray and Play"

I've been loving Keesha Sharp's portrayal of Monica on "Girlfriends" ever since she joined the cast- but only second of course to Tracee Ellis Ross' portrayal of Joan Carol Clayton. I'm still mourning the end of the show without a proper finale.... but back to the post! I've used almost all of Sexy Hair products while in cosmetology school and have not only been pleased with the results, but very impressed that there's a product for just about every hair type/issue. I love Keesha's signature big hair and would recommend Big Sexy Hair's "Spray and Play" for holding the volume her hair is so well known for, and for infusing shine. This hairspray fights humidity, while ensuring a flexible hold. This means that she can style and restyle her hair during shooting of the show and on the red carpet with no issues.

Any Sexy Hair fans out there?

Mischo Beauty Reader Favorite: Crème de la Mer's Moisturizing Cream

Today's reader favorite comes from Ashley, who I happened to meet at an advanced skincare training class a few months ago- and who actually completed esthetics school around the same time as I. She's in her late 20's and has been using Creme de la Mer's Moisturizing Cream for a few years now and is addicted to it! In all honesty, she says she started using it after reading about all the celebrities who loved it, but says she also believes that it's never to early to start working to prevent premature aging. She follows the usage directions by warming the cream up between her fingers before application and applies it to her freshly cleansed face, neck and decollete (which she calls her "second face"), but only at night. She said she prefers a lighter moisturizer with an SPF during the day, but loves waking up to smooth, firm and refreshed skin. She feels it's definitely worth the price! I will say that in knowing that Ashley is a licensed esthetician with a very large clientele, I know that she's tried her fair share of products and based on her suggestion, I've moved this to the top of my wish list!

Anyone else using La Mer products? What's your favorite?

Mischo Beauty Product Review: Juice Beauty Organics To Go

Juice Beauty so graciously gave me the opportunity to try their "Organics To Go" skincare kit. I was so excited- especially after having spent the past couple of months educating myself on natural vs. organic skincare products. Juice Beauty's skincare is up to 95% certified organic, contains powerful antioxidants (which work against premature aging) and meets USDA organic guidelines. I'd moved from using Dermalogica, to giving natural and organic products a try, so this opportunity was right on time! So, the Juice Beauty kit included cleansing milk, antioxidant serum (which I wrote about last week), green apple peel, hydrating mist, oil-free moisturizer, organic bamboo washcloth and an instruction sheet on how to use each product. Now I've written about the benefits of a great skincare regimen many, many times and I'm happy that this kit included everything you'd need to get started! I loved everything in this kit, with my favorites being the antioxidant serum and the green apple peel. I have a slight addiction to exfoliants, and when I looked at my skin after having used the green apple peel, I was in love! It left my skin so soft and glowing! Oh and please note- you can only use the peel once a week! Anyway, I followed the steps to the AM and PM regimen and after three weeks I'm very, very pleased with the results. Any Juice Beauty fans out there? Any questions about the products?

Mischo Beauty Pick: YSL Rouge Pure Shine No. 27

Please accept my apologies for the late post! I'm working to get my wireless DSL issues worked out with Verizon ASAP! At any rate my pick for today is totally by accident. I'd gone to the NARS counter at Bloomingdales and asked the two associates behind the counter to "wow" me with a sexy nude lip for the summer. Can I just tell you all that they looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language! Good grief! Anyway, I decided to just browse the beauty counters - because I really wanted to try something new- and stumbled on this lipstick by YSL and I love it! Not only is the color- No. 27 (Natural Honey) perfect for my complexion, but the consistency is that of both a lipstick and lip gloss. It glides on so smooth and has the shine of a lip gloss, with no sticky feel to it! I'm wearing it with my MAC Oak lip pencil. Oh and the packaging is so chic and sophisticated- you should check it out the next time you're near a counter.

Do you have any YSL Beauty favorites?

Mischo Beauty School: Haircolor 101

I'm passionate about haircolor and I'm writing about this topic, yet again! My apprenticeship at Vidal Sassoon required me to search high and low for models wanting root touch-ups, highlights, gray coverage, bleach & tones, highlift blondes, and single & double processes. Believe it or not, I was always able to find a model that needed one of these services and the results always left me amazed and excited about the next challenge.

With that said, let's discuss haircolor. It falls into four categories: temporary, semipermanent, demipermanent, and permanent.

1. Temporary haircolor coats the hair shaft and is easily removed by shampooing. Examples include: color rinses or color-enhancing shampoos.

2. Semipermanent haircolor partially penetrates the hair shaft and slowly fades with shampooing. It doesn't lighten the hair and is usually used to enhance fading haircolor.

3. Demipermanent haircolor doesn't lighten hair and, like semipermanent haircolor, it is used to enhance fading haircolor. It penetrates the hair shaft and lasts longer than semipermanent haircolor.

4. Permanent haircolor is used to lighten hair and cover grey. It remains in the hair shaft until the growth of new hair.

Love your hair. Any questions?
