Lancome's Oscillation mascara launched today- but for one day only! It's a vibrating mascara with a reported 7000 oscillations per minute! Wow. I really need to try this one! I just checked Lancome's website and they're sold out until the release in December. But, there's a link with a list of stores accepting phone orders.
What do you think?

Mischo Beauty Alert: MAC Starflash

Can you keep up? I'm trying! I just received an email blast announcing MAC's newest collection, Starflash. It includes 12 limited edition eye shadows, Kohl Power Eye Pencils, and Plush Lash.
"Hollywood's new Power Couple. Our 12 new limited-edition Starfish shadows, combined with Kohl Power Eye Pencil. Shades for a smooth, creamy, cushioned life. Provides the double-wattagae impact that will take you to the new stylesphere!"

Mischo Beauty: Elie Saab Fall 2008 Couture

I've read that the inspiration for this collection was the Sistine Chapel. I love the use of fabric- both textures and colors. The hair (teased, airy updos), makeup (smoky eyes and pale lips) and the nail color (reminds me of CHANEL's Vamp or OPI's Lincoln Park After Dark) are the perfect accents to a beautiful collection. Oh, and did I mention how much I LOVE the shoes! Feel free to check out my Lookbook to see more looks from the show.

Mischo Beauty School: Exfoliation 101 (Part 2)

Who knew that over-exfoliation or too-much exfoliation could lead to premature aging? Well it's true! Just when you thought you were taking the necessary steps to ensure that you’re rid of all the oil, dirt, and debris that clog your pores causing break-outs and acne you learn that too-much can be damaging! Over-exfoliation can cause irritation/inflammation, and when our normal cellular functions have to work to combat this, the result is a break down in collagen, elastin and hydration. The end result is dry, wrinkled, sagging skin. I must admit that I've been guilty of this and had to learn the hard way by having to deal with irritated skin. As an esthetician, my recommendation is to use an exfoliation product for your particular skin type, no more than 2-3 times a week. Always consult your esthetician or the manufacturer’s directions for correct product usage information.
Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions! Love your skin.

Mischo Beauty Extra: Pink Pop by Milani
My reader Andrea alerted me to the fact that L'Oreal's HIP Jelly Balms were "buy one get one free" at CVS. She picked up Plush and Savory and said she liked them. So I dashed over to the CVS near me to find that they were all sold out. I picked up a raincheck, and as I was browsing around Milani's Pink Pop nail polish caught my eye. I haven't worn flourescent nail polish in years and I thought this would be fun. It's very cute on, but I'm seriously over nail polish that takes more than two coats to achieve a perfect finish!

Beautiful hair needs an expert: Kerastase Reflection

If you've been following my blog, you know by now how much I love Kerastase products! I've had the opportunity to work with just about every Kerastase product over the past three years. My recommendation for color-treated hair is the Kerastase Reflection regimen. The Bain Miroir shampoo eliminates build-up and provides protection, while smoothing the hair's cuticle. The Chroma Reflect Masque smells sooooo good! It's always the top deep conditioning treatment of choice used in the salon. It's perfect for adding much needed moisture to the hair and extending color. Finally, the Chroma Protect is great for styling. It's applied to damp hair and provides protection, smooths the hair shaft and adds shine.
The Kerastase Reflection regimen gets my "Sexy, Healthy, Beautiful" stamp of approval!

Mischo Beauty Product Review: L'Oreal Studio Smoothness

I was recently given the opportunity to test L'Oreal's Studio Smoothness and I gladly accepted because I'm always searching for great styling products. After reading the ingredients, and taking into account the fact that I'd be using this product on the relaxed sections of my type 4a/4b hair, I knew I'd only use it on my hair when wet. I liked the texture of the product- it's thick and creamy, and I liked the fact that it absorbed quickly and made blow-drying easy. For the price, it's worth a try.

Mischo Beauty Product Review: Microdermx

I've posted a few lessons on microdermabrasion in the past and have expressed my thoughts regarding the best candidates for the procedure, as well as my personal experiences with it. When given the opportunity to try Microdermx, I honestly thought it was just another exfoliant, but I was wrong. Microdermx is a microdermabrasion treatment made with medical-grade corundum crystals and works to refine enlarged pores, fade blemishes (acne scars, fine lines, uneven skin tone), stimulate collagen and elastin production, and increase cellular renewal. As soon as I applied Step 1 (Refinish), I knew right away that this was a professional strength treatment. It immediately reminded me of the microdermabrasion treatments I'd received in the past. Step 2 (Replenish) felt both calming and soothing on my skin. I think this is a good alternative for home use and I love the fact that there are no artificial fragrances/colors, parabens or fillers.

Mischo Beauty School: Hair Porosity 101

I've received a few emails asking me to discuss the reason(s) why hair becomes damaged and dry after certain chemical services. Well, there could quite possibly be hundreds of answers to those questions depending on the history of services performed on the hair and the home care regimen. I will say that if your hair is damaged and overly dry, then your hair's porosity has probably been compromised. So what is porosity? Porosity is simply the ability of the hair to absorb and retain moisture and is used to describe the condition of hair. It falls into the following categories:
a. Very porous
b. Porous
c. Normal
d. Resistant
A “normal” porosity will mean that the cuticle (outermost layer of the hair shaft) is closed and smooth. Healthy hair will usually have a normal to resistant cuticle, depending on the texture. ”Porous” to “very porous” hair will have a roughened cuticle meaning that the hair is probably damaged. It usually loses moisture very easy and is easily damaged.
So, to determine the porosity of your hair, feel it - both when it's wet and dry. If it feels like straw and it's rough when it's dry, or if it feels gummy or slightly rubbery when it's wet, then you probably have a problem with porous to very porous hair. You should definitely talk to your stylist before receiving any chemical services in order to prevent further damage. Haircolor, perms and relaxers will process much faster on porous to very porous hair and may cause damage.
Porous to very porous hair can be caused by:
1. Over coloring
2. Bleaching
3. Permanent Waving
4. Relaxing
5. Flat/curling irons
6. Improper blow-drying
7. Environment (sun, salt/chlorinated water)
Please feel free to e-mail me with more questions! Love your hair.

Beautiful hair needs an expert: Kerastase Noctogenist

I'm a huge fan of Kerastase products after having worked with just about all of them during my apprenticeships. After seeing ads for the Kerastase Noctogenist line in foreign fashion magazines and then reading about it in the July issue of ELLE, I learned that it's going to be introduced to the U.S. It's an overnight conditioning leave-in treatment- the Voile Nuit for Fine Hair and the Serum Nuit for Thick Hair. Both are formulated with vitamin E, which provides protection and moisture and amino acids, which help to strengthen and revive the hair. In case you didn't know, hair is 91% protein and protein is made up of amino acids! The best part of the Noctogenist line is that, according to the Kerastase website, it leaves no residue on pillows! I recommend this for the jet-setting Sienna Miller and I can't wait to try it out myself!

Mischo Beauty Pick: Dr.Hauschka Body Care Kit

As you all probably know by now, I became a fan of Dr. Hauschka's products after trying the Daily Face Care Kit, about a month ago. All of Dr. Hauschka's products are certified "biodynamic" (which is a certification above "natural" and "organic") and are made with plant oils, extracts and essential oils. I recently hit the 100 mile mark on nikeplus.com, in an effort to remain "sexy, healthy & beautiful", and treated myself to the Body Care Kit. The Lavendar Bath was my absolute favorite from this kit, exactly what I needed to soak, sooth and relax my tired body. The Rose Body Moisturizer left my skin soft and hydrated after my bath and I've added the Hand Cream to my ever-growing makeup bag so that I have it on hand, at all times!
Any other tips for remaining "sexy, healthy & beautiful"?

Mischo Beauty School: Blackheads 101

After reviewing my previous posts on facials, exfoliation, serums, facial masks, facial cleansing, etc. I just realized that I've never discussed blackheads, or as they are technically called, "open comedones". Blackheads are simply a build up of hardened oil and dead skin cells in a hair follicle; and when the hair follicle is exposed to oxygen, it oxidizes and turns black- therefore the name "blackhead". I've seen blackheads on just about every skin type, but particularly on those with oily skin and oily t-zones. Here are ways to prevent them:
1. Use skincare products with noncomedogenic ingredients (will prevent pores from clogging)
2. Cleanse your skin both morning and night
3. Incorporate an exfoliant into your skincare regimen (will remove dead skin cells)
4. Incorporate a "clay-based" mask into your skincare regimen (will draw excess oil out of the follicle)
5. Incorporate a facial (professional cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, steam treatment, massage, etc) by an esthetician into your skincare regimen (the benefits are countless!)
Because my skin is pretty much normal, but with an oily t-zone, my blackheads show up around my nose and between my eyebrows. I'm able to keep them under control with exfoliation, using a clay-based mask on those areas only, and monthly facials.
Any questions? Love your skin.

Mischo Beauty Extra: Lemonade Stand By Your Man By OPI
My intention was to use MAC's "Phosphor", but it was sold out at the MAC store in Georgetown. I settled on OPI's "Lemonade Stand By Your Man" and I'll be the first to admit that I was clearly in denial when I bought this color for myself, but I just had to give it a try! Anyway, it clearly doesn't work with my complexion- and what's even worse is that I had to apply 5 - 6 coats just to achieve the color in the bottle.

Beautiful hair needs an expert: SET by HairPlay Salon

I guess you all know how much I love Estelle! I promise no more posts (for a while at least ;) Anyway, I love her haircut so much that it makes me want to cut my hair! I need a new look for the fall, maybe this? A style like this definitely requires that the hair be sculpted/molded into place before sitting under a hooded hair dryer, and for that I'd use HairPlay Salon's SET. It's a setting lotion that acts as a detangler and thermal protectant. I used it to blow-dry my hair straight and had no issues with it making my hair heavy or with flaking. You can use this for blow-drying, roller-sets, molding/sculpting hair, or as a leave-in for natural/curly hairstyles. What I liked most about this is that it comes in different holding strengths - such as "Light Hold", "Medium Hold" and "Extra Hold" for use on every hair type. For those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area, check out the salon!

Mischo Beauty Pick: MAC Tendertones, Electro Flash, Sonic Chic & New View

I stopped by MAC last night to check out the Tendertones lip balm collection- I had to see what the excitement was about before I missed it. I bought "Hush, Hush" - which on me is a nude lip with sparkle/shine. The color is very sheer and the texture is thicker than I'd expected, but it feels very moisturizing. I do like the fact that it has an SPF of 12. I promise to post photos this weekend!
While I was there, I also found out that the Electro Flash, Sonic Chic and New View collections will be available tomorrow, but you can check them out online now!
Any thoughts on the Tendertones collection?

Mischo Beauty School: Facial Masks 101

After last week's post on exfoliation, I received quite a few emails requesting a recommendation of a good mask. Before I suggest a mask, I need to know your skin type because generally there are two types of masks I recommend: setting & non-setting masks. Setting masks, which normally use clay as their base, harden and dry and absorb oil and remove dead skin cells. Non-setting masks can be used for normal, dry or sensitive skin and are primarily moisturizing and soothing. Benefits of masks include the following:
1. Tighten and tone the skin
2. Draw impurities out of the pores
3. Assist in clearing of blemishes
4. Hydrate & nourish the skin
5. Calm & soothe the skin
I personally use a combination of both mask types. I use a setting mask on my oily t-zone and a non-setting mask everywhere else.
Any questions? Love your skin.

Beautiful hair needs an expert: Elasta QP Design Foam

By the time I finished cosmetology school I'd mastered finishing a roller-set in 8 minutues! I was the fastest and earned the crown of "roller-set queen"! It's funny, I know, but you're taught that "time is money" and you shouldn't spend all day sectioning, applying product and rolling a client's hair- plus, you need to factor in drying time, especially if a client has thick hair. The bottom line was that you won't make money if you're slow! Anyway, I love this cover of Beyonce in a roller-set and I'd recommend Elasta QP's Design Foam for achieving a soft set with lots of body. This foam doesn't make the hair feel hard once it's dry and a little goes a long way, so be sure to use only what's needed based on the texture/length of your hair. It helps to detangle hair, making it easy to section off. I also love how it leaves the hair soft and shiny.
Do you roller-set your own hair- or does your stylist do it?

Mischo Beauty Pick: Anastasia Brow Scissors
Since I'm a licensed esthetician I guess I'm somewhat particular about the tools I use on my brows. I'd posted a few months ago about my "must-haves" for achieving my perfect brow. I know they're old-school (as I was told) - but they work for me! And, I'm always complemented on my brows! I recently added Anastasia's Brow Scissors to my kit and I'm very pleased with the ease of use. The blade is the perfect shape and length for safely trimming across the top of my brows. They were designed by the brow expert, Anastasia Soare for home use, for anyone!

Mischo Beauty Pick: Charged Up Cherry By OPI
I gave myself a pedicure a few days ago and I'm in love with OPI's "Charged Up Cherry"- so much so, that I had to post about it! I'd been wearing OPI's "Atomic Orange", which I think is hot, but I'm in love with this new color. It's part of the "Brights by OPI" collection and it's a hot pink with a little orange, and a little red in it. The image I've included really doesn't do it justice! Since it's summer, I've been changing the nail polish on my toes every week, but I love this color so much that I think I may need to give it more time to be shown off!
What nail polish color are you wearing at the moment?

Mischo Beauty Product Review: African Pride Miracle Deep Conditioning No Lye Relaxer System
My fascination with relaxers started at a young age. I was allowed to get my very first relaxer my sophomore year in high school, only because I had a job and could pay for it. This fascination grew over the years and by my senior year at Spelman, my friend and I were researching the differences between "lye" and "no-lye" relaxers for our final analytical chemistry project. I've discussed the differences in a previous post, so I won't go into it again. What I do like about this African Pride Miracle Deep Conditioning No Lye Relaxer System is that it is a "no-lye" relaxer (which I recommend for home use!), which means it's not as strong as a "lye" relaxer. I also like the fact that it contains "healing & hydrating herbs" which work to moisturize, protect and condition the hair. This isn't a "natural" relaxer (by the way, there is no such thing!) but the benefits of the natural ingredients will help to keep your hair in good health. Lastly, I love the fact that this comes in "regular", "super" and "sensitive" strengths, because using a relaxer strength stronger than what's needed for your particular hair texture/need could result in serious damage!
Any questions?

Mischo Beauty Product Review: Dr. Miracle’s Intensive Spot Serum
Dr. Miracle's Intensive Spot Serum is a leave-in treatment formulated to treat areas of slow growth, breakage, and split ends. The manufacturer's directions suggest that it be massaged into the scalp and used on problem areas twice a day. Those I know who've used it and love it, have said that they felt a "tingling sensation" which I would attribute to the peppermint oil, which is listed as one of the ingredients. Peppermint oil is also known to stop the growth of bacteria, which means that this will help keep your areas of problem growth free of bacteria which might be one of the reasons there is an issue with consistent hair growth.
Has anyone tried this or any other Dr. Miracle's products?
